Updown.io is a monitoring service for web pages, which works by sending HTTP requests periodically to check their availability and performance. When there is a problem, you are notified by email or SMS.
It has several servers distributed around the world to better simulate the normal behavior of clients on the Internet. If a server has difficulty accessing a monitored website, the service makes a request from a server in another location to avoid false positives.
Highlighted Features
Personally, I really liked that it includes statistics on the loading time according to the location of the monitoring servers. It is very useful to know approximately the loading times experienced by visitors to different locations. Detects revoked and expiring certificates.
Page performance statistics show:
- DNS resolution time (only with pages that use domains)
- Connection time
- TLS Handshake time (HTTPS only)
- Server response time
It is compatible with IPv6 (although it does not allow statistics to be separated at the moment). We can see the history of a page for up to several months through a calendar, but only based on availability through a color code. It supports HTTPS, HTTP, ICMP (ping) and TCP, and manages an application performance index (Apdex) as a satisfaction index around loading times. The interval between requests ranges from 15 seconds to 1 hour.
When selecting the locations of a monitor, we can choose between 2 and 8 monitors:
- Los Angeles, USA
- Miami, USA
- Montreal, Canada
- Roubaix, France
- Frankfurt, Germany
- Singapore, Singapore
- Tokyo Japan
- Sydney, Australia
We can also modify the headers of the HTTP and HTTPS requests.
Missing features or functions that could be improved
The function that shows page loading performance only shows the status in the last 24 hours, and it is not possible to go back.
Credit payment and consumption system
It uses a credit method that is used when having active monitors, these are spent for each monitor request. When you are a new user, you are given 100,000 credits completely free without the need to register credit or debit cards. Credits never expire and there is a minimum of 5 euros to recharge credits. In the credit packages, the larger packages offer you more credits in the price and credit ratio. The panel shows you an approximate time it will take to consume the credits you have available according to all the active monitors and their frequency. Credit consumption is affected by the number of monitors and the interval between requests, but not by the number of locations chosen. SMS have an extra cost each time one is sent, just as monitoring also consumes credits.
